Manos del Uruguay yarns are produced by a not-for-profit co-operative comprising hundreds of women who spin the fleece of local sheep plus silk and cashmere before hand-dyeing the yarns in large kettles.

They supply to customers throughout the world. These include familiar names such as Ralph Lauren, Benetton, DKNY and many more.

Each skein that is produced is personally signed by the artisan responsible for it, which is testament to the importance placed by Manos del Uruguay and Artesano itself on supporting the women's role in society, providing them not only with economic independence, but also opportunities for personal growth.

Manos holds the highly respected Fair Trade mark, provided by the International Fair-trade Organisation - one of the few yarn companies to do so.

So just what is it that makes alpaca so good?

  • Strong whilst being incredibly soft and lightweight, this yarn is recognised as one of the most luxurious in the world.
  • It is amazingly warm whilst being breathable, comfortable and long lasting.
  • Due to its construction (contains microscopic air pockets) alpaca is warm and yet light to wear, so is a useful all year round material.
  • As alpaca contains no lanolin it is hypoallergenic and thus ideal for people who find their skin is too sensitive for sheep wool. This makes it very suitable for baby clothes.
  • Alpaca comes from a sustainable source - the wonderful alpacas of South America- and does not contain harmful chemical toxins that are often found in synthetic and non-organic clothing.
  • Not only does alpaca look wonderful and feel wonderful, it was once treasured by the Inca rulers for its unique strength, softness and sheen.
